Europeans overwhelmingly against immigration: Poll

Published 23 August 2011

An international survey of 23 countries by Ipsos has found opposition to immigration in numerous countries across the world, with majorities often considering its effects to be negative and its scale excessive. European nations were typical of this trend.

Majorities in countries as diverse as Germany, South Africa, Russia, Turkey and the United States were found to consider immigration to have a "very or fairly negative impact".

Anti-immigration sentiment was particularly strong in Europe, with over 65% of Spaniards, Italians and British polled strongly or partly agreeing that "there are too many immigrants in our country".

Sweden and Poland were the only European countries surveyed that did not have majorities who considered immigration to have a negative impact. In no country did a majority consider immigration to have been beneficial.

Majorities in most EU countries surveyed agreed that immigration had made it more difficult for citizens to find employment and "placed too much pressure on public services," such as health care and education.

Anti-immigrant sentiment has put significant strain on freedom of movement within the EU. On 11 August, the European Commission approved Spain's measures to exclude Romanian workers from its labour market. The Spanish unemployment rate is by far the highest in the EU at 21%. Bulgaria and Romania recently saw their accession to the Schengen border-free area postponed.

The Dutch and Danish governments, whose parliamentary majorities are dependent on the support of far-right anti-immigrant parties, have pushed particularly hard to limit immigration. In the case of Denmark, the unilateral imposition of new border controls was harshly criticised by the European Commission and Germany.

Immigration in Europe: Declining and uneven

The number of migrants in the world has increased dramatically over the past decade, according to the International Organisation for Migration, soaring from 150 million in 2000 to 214 million today. Immigration to the European Union, however, has dropped somewhat in recent years due to the economic recession.

A major study published last month by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that immigration to most European nations declined in 2009, including in France (7%), Germany (13%), Spain (18%) and Italy (25%). Immigration rates to Ireland and the Czech Republic virtually halved over the course of that year.

Similarly the EU's own statistical service, Eurostat, found that immigration to EU member states dropped by 6% in 2008, while emigration increased by 13%. But Eurostat also indicates that the number of foreign residents in various EU countries has nonetheless been on the rise, increasing from approximately 28,913,000 in 2007 to 32,493,000 today (including EU citizens residing in another member state).

While anti-immigration sentiment, according to the poll, is broadly shared across Europe, there are significant national differences. The number of foreigners in some countries, particularly Belgium, France and Germany, has grown relatively slowly over the past decade or has even declined.

Other countries, often traditionally lands of emigration, have seen spectacular increases in foreign residents. According to Eurostat, between 1999 and 2010 their numbers increased from 1.2 million to 4.2 million in Italy, from less than 120,000 to 420,000 in Ireland, and from 650,000 to 5.7 million in Spain.

COMMENTS

  • Euractiv should not publish polls like this one mixing all sorts of countries, all sorts of statistics, e.g. immigration into European countries taking at the same time into account the movements of EU citizens inside the EU. This is mixing apples and pears as we say in French. Tony

  • You won't change a perception of the truth! The truth is, that immigration into the UK has cost us billions of pounds and continues to do so. It's cost us millions of jobs and continues to do so. Its damaged communities, as immigrants congregate into one area and turn that area into a replica of their homeland. It's damaged our economy and our lives. BUT, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE PEOPLE OF BRITAIN WEREN'T ASKED AND NOW WE HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING WE HAD NO VOTE ON!

  • Indigenous Europeans are not allowed to have legitimate Ethnic/Genetic Interests. Only racially alien Third world immigrants are permitted to have such interests. White peoples' EGI have been pathologised by Cultural Marxmanship.

  • Well the majority have spoken. That's democracy. Now stop immigration or there will be a revolution in Europe to remove the criminals from power.

  • Only the first two comments to this article made any sense whatsoever. Where the comment about the UK is concerned: The UK set out to create a low-skilled class of labourers from the onset. That was the point of throwing open their borders, with no discretion on who they'd accept, based on the idea of having incredibly cheap labour at their disposal. Where the UK created their own problem is that this class of low-skilled people were, at the same time, denied opportunities to increase their skills to gain better employment and thereby escape poverty within one or two generations. Secondly, these immigrants and their children received very little or poor education. The UK is one of the most divisive countries in the world, segregating along the lines of race coupled with social class; they created and maintained this cycle of poverty. It is therefore no wonder that riots broke out recently again. Secondly, I agree with Tony van der Haegen (the first comment). I think the data should the decoupled to present opinions regarding EU nationals' mobility within the EU, low-skilled non-EU immigration, and highly-skilled non-EU immigration. Reason being is that I suspect - and have experienced it myself; I'm a non-EU national who has lived within the EU for many years - that EU nationals have a completely different attitude toward (i) university students, researchers and skilled professionals (e.g., engineers) than they do toward (ii) the colonial guilt-ridden charity cases, where people are quite literally coming to live off of the social welfare system with their victimisation. That is one thing that I wish ALL European countries would take on a very clear stance: Stop giving handouts in any form to countries and their nationals that are frankly unwilling to take responsibility and accountability for themselves. The aid is not deserved if these people seem to make no effort to make their own regions hospitable for their own people. This is where I am so sick and tired of reading comments of the likes that "Bob and the Boys" posted. When are these black people to whom you refer going to stop being victims, and start getting to work and taking responsibility for their own people??? Then, I would also like the rhetoric surrounding immigration to fundamentally change. Let's be frankly honest - I think EU countries (as any other country) reserve the right to be selective about whom they welcome into the country. Why should an EU country encourage the kind of immigration where people are not willing and not able to make valued contributions to their society? I am not saying outright elitism is the answer. But I am saying this: change the way immigration is talked about. "We welcome those who are motivated, hard-working, willing to integrate and learn the language, willing to make valued and much-needed contributions to this society, so that it then benefits EVERYONE in this society." Isn't that basically one of the pillars of the European Union? The idea that through cooperation and mutual trust, every single country benefits, but so does the entire region. This is what should be upheld and promoted.

  • Would you go to China and tell the Chinese their continued existence is irrelevant? Would you go to Haiti and tell the Haitians their continued existence is irrelevant? Would you go to Algeria and tell the Algerians their continued existence is irrelevant? Oh course not. That would be "racist"! But the anti-whites say that the continued existence of my race, the white race,is irrelevant! PROOF that: Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white

  • I would bet that 40 years ago if polls were taken and Europeans were asked if they favored allowing millions of non-Europeans into their countries-- they would have said it was a bad idea then too. And 39 years ago the same... right up until today. So why has it happened? Powerful people have an agenda. And deliberate or not, that agenda is a form of genocide against white native European people. Hmm, it most likely IS deliberate. Bob is right: Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

  • Democracy as it is practiced in most countries is a fucking lie, a sham, a con a dirty, rotten, dysfunctional corpse. The only country that I know of with a true democracy is Switzerland. They actually let the people vote on important decisions that concern the people.

Yes, you heard right, those aren't opinion polls. It's a real voting process and the result is what they'll do then. Big surprise, Switzerland has the absolute toughest immigration laws in Europe. That's how it should be in every European country.

We need another revolution if we want true democracy. As it is we are all powerless. If you don't do something, you will never be able to stop them from destroying your home.

  • Europe should stay European, you don't see thousands of Europeans migrating to Africa and claiming racism when the Africans would rightfully object. This is wrong and should be stopped right away before things turn really nasty in European countrys and it won't be long, you all saw what happend in London.

  • The reason people in Poland are not in majority against immigration is that the Polish themselves tend to emmigrate. If a 50 year old man were to be against immigration, while his son was picking cucmumbers in the Netherlands, he would be a hypocrite. In my town, 1/4 of the households have a relative working in the West. And it's not like they take jobs away from the citizens of the nation the emmigrated to. Polish pick fruit and vegetables, work in assembly lines, work in construction as labourers, clean homes and businesses. These are not exactly jobs the unemployed of a certain nation fight for.
Next, non Polish nationals only account for 1% of the population. People don't even notice this, because the majority are Germans, Ukrainians or Russians. So there is a sense that immigration has not effected Poland.
Unemployment is high (9%), and let's face it, Polish wages are a fraction of those in let's say Spain, where unemployment is even higher, but the wages are definately higher. In Spain, it is financially beneficial to hire an immigrant, because a domestic worker would have to be paid much more. In Poland the difference in wages between an immigrant or domestic worker are not that big.
And I will only notion the fact that Poland is NOT a tempting nation to immigrate to. Low or no social benefits, low wages. An emmigrant prefers to go to the rich Germany, France or UK, where he will recieve many more benefits plus a higher wage.

  • Africa for the Africans
    Asia for the Asians
    White countries for EVERYONE

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are more crowded than Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to "assimilate," i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I'm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn't object to this?

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

    Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

  • I don't think there is a nation as vile, chauvinistic and arrogant as the French are. They do deserve their third world immigrants, they truly do. This is what you get for exploiting other countries - a boomerang effect.

Background:

In recent months, EU governments have agreed a series of measures to strengthen the bloc's external borders and prevent illegal migrants from North Africa from reaching European shores and seeking jobs.

The European Commission in July ruled that Italy and France did not breach EU rules by adopting their own measures to deal with an influx of migrants from Tunisia earlier this year, but failed to respect the "spirit" of the Schengen agreement.

Britain, where riots in recent days have exposed a deepening gap between rich and poor, has capped the number of workers it allows in from outside the EU to 21,700 a year, down from around 28,000 in 2009.

Earlier in August, Spain, where unemployment rates have soared above 20%, was given the green light to restrict the number of Romanian workers seeking employment in the country in order to protect its labour market.
