Resource efficiency: towards a circular economy

MEPs are rushing to get an agreement on how EU funds will be spent on regions in the next budgetary period (2014-2020), but it remains to be seen how 'green' the proposal will be with some lawmakers saying it retains subsidies for non-climate-friendly gas and oil projects.

The EU's roadmap for a resource-efficient Europe received a green light from the European Parliament yesterday (24 May), in a bid to “turn talk into reality” for green economic growth. 

Industry players complain that the EU’s overregulated raw materials market makes their prices uncompetitive in the global economy.

The European Commissions' promising eco-design directive is struggling to gain traction because of staff shortages, undermining efforts to set energy-efficiency standards for products, said one expert who monitors the legislation.
