Europe's Regions in 2020

The European Commission has unveiled yesterday (6 October) its blueprint for the next generation of EU cohesion funds after 2013, under which it will be able to suspend funding if member states flout budget rules or breach the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact.

Echoing Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn, the European Parliament said the EU should take steps to ensure that regional policy is more results-oriented so that EU funds are spent more efficiently and effectively, with a clear focus on supporting sustainable economic growth, especially in urban areas.

There are compelling reasons for the EU's institutions – and not its member states – to remain the central distributors of regional funds, a panel of high-level experts concluded in Brussels yesterday (7 October).

The European Commission and member states have made "no contact" with the Committee of the Regions (CoR) during key debates on the EU's future regional policy and the 2020 growth strategy for the coming decade – a big mistake, CoR member Michael Schneider told EurActiv in an interview.
