Consumer groups slam EU 'basic bank account' plan - 19 July 2011 - News

The European Commission yesterday (18 July) urged EU governments to make available to all consumers a basic payment account to ensure that all sections of the population can fully participate in society. But consumer groups accused the Commission of backing down on past promises to table legislation on the matter. 

Parliament extends deposit guarantee to SMEs - 19 December 2008 - News

After helping to bail out several banks during the financial turmoil, the European Parliament yesterday (18 December) endorsed proposals to raise coverage of bank deposits across Europe to €100,000 from 2010, extending the guarantee to SMEs and local authorities as well as to individual savers as originally intended.
