A deal on the 2013 budget, voted by the European Parliament yesterday (12 December), plugs a hole in the EU's finances for 2012 and removes uncertainty about funding for the Erasmus student exchange programme next year, the European Commission said.

More than 100 European personalities from the worlds of education, art, literature, economics, philosophy and sport have signed an open letter to EU heads of state and government in support of the threatened Erasmus student exchange programme.

Fraternité 2020, the first registered European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), will start collecting signatures as soon as the organisers have overcome server problems. The organisers from the Citizens’ Committee still maintain the goal of collecting one million signatures from all over Europe by May 2013.

The Erasmus progamme which allows thousands of students to spend time studying in other EU countries, could not be launched today, said the father of the initiative, Domenico Lenarduzzi, in an interview with EurActiv.

Europe's most celebrated student exchange programme is set to win a 71% funding increase under European Commission plans for the 2014-2020 budget, with education and training schemes now all regrouped under the Erasmus brand.

To help the European tourist sector recover from a two-year crisis, the European Commission is preparing a number of actions to prolong the tourist season, according to plans due to be presented today (30 June).

The EP Education Committee adopted a report on the Erasmus world programme on 17 March 2003. Changes to the initial Commission's proposal mainly concern the name and the available funding.

On 17 December, the European Parliament adopted a resolution giving recommendations to the Commission to improve its monitoring and evaluation of the Youth and Socrates programmes.

The Commission launched on 4 November a large-scale public consultation process to prepare the new European education, training, and youth programmes.

To celebrate the first million of "Erasmus students", the Commission launches a European Erasmus Week from 18th to 25th October.
