French nationalist party 'Front National' launched its campaign for the upcoming EU elections last weekend (14-15 March), showcasing its leader Jean-Marie Le Pen in an attempt to gain more votes and re-establish a far-right group in the European Parliament. EurActiv France reports.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, the 80-year old historic leader of the Front National, the French nationalist party, has announced his candidacy for the June European elections, hinting at his possible future retirement from politics after dominating the far-right for over thirty years.

A poll, conducted by Ipsos, indicates that the center-right could win 41 per cent of the votes in the first round of the French general elections on 9 June (versus 39 per cent of votes for the Socialists). According to the same poll, the extreme-right Front National could win up to 12 per cent of the votes.

On Sunday 5 May, French citizens re-elected Jacques Chirac as their new President, in the second round of the elections.
