The EU will decide whether to adopt coercive economic measures against the Faroe Islands, over a dispute on the quota allocation of herring. Not only does the proposed EU action contravene the UN's Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), it is also based on inaccurate allegations and is counterproductive to a reaching a negotiated solution, writes Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen.

European Union fisheries ministers have hammered out a 2013 quota deal, which they said struck a compromise between protecting over-exploited stocks such as haddock and plaice and safeguarding fishermen's livelihoods.

The European Commission has declared its intention to give due consideration to scientific data on stock depletion as it sets the EU's fishing limits for 2011.

The Commission is launching consultations for an all-encompassing approach to maritime and coastland policy aimed at developing sustainable economic activity. Sectors concerned include fisheries, tourism, energy and transport.
