UK veterinary authorities informed the European Commission on 22 September 2007 of the presence of the bluetongue viral infection in cattle near Ipswich, Suffolk, in another blow for farmers beset by the reinstatement of the EU's ban on British meat exports, following the re-emergence of foot-and-mouth disease in the UK.  

The revised new Directive proposed by the Commission on 18 December aims to improve EU measures to control future outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

On 16 December, Agriculture Ministers reached political agreement on two food safety issues: the hygiene rules for food of animal origin and a new legislation banning the use of antibiotics as growth promoters.

Meeting on 10 July, the EU's Food Chain Committee decided not to take any additional measures concerning the Belgian Bioland food scare.

On 27 June, the Agriculture Council reached a political agreement on a regulation on the hygiene and safety standards of foodstuffs.
