EU steps up response to Syrian massacre
The United States and at least seven other Western countries expelled Syrian diplomats from their capitals yesterday (29 May) in a coordinated action against President Bashar al-Assad's government over the killing of more than 100 civilians in a Syrian town. An EU-wide expulsion, however, has not been decided.

Bulgaria waters down public smoking ban - 21 May 2010 - News

Bulgarian lawmakers voted yesterday (20 May) to loosen a smoking ban which would have forbidden smoking in all public spaces from June this year.

The European Parliament has urged member states to impose unrestricted smoking bans in all enclosed workplaces, public buildings and transport, and asked the Commission to draft specific rules on the protection of non-smokers if they fail to do so.
