Ports and maritime transport issues

The study deals with the challenges faced by the Baltic and Mediterranean ports in the enlarged EU.

The Baltic and Mediterranean ports are not confronted with the same issues and constraints: there follows a review of the characteristics of maritime transport in the countries which will join the EU in 2004.

Located in a cul-de-sac bounded by Denmark, the Baltic ports are regrouping, in order to become a corridor for East-West transit.

On 26 May, the European Space Agency announced the official launch of the Galileo satellite navigation system which will allow the Europeans to be independent from the US military-controlled GPS (Global Positioning System).

The Commission plans to set up a notification procedure for all driving restrictions for heavy lorries that Member States want to introduce. It wants to ascertain their compliance with the Treaty before rather than after they are implemented.

The EU wants to increase road safety through the use of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). In that context, the Commission presented on 15 September 2003 a set of measures to develop safer and more intelligent vehicles with the aim of halving the number of deaths from road accidents by 2010.

Van Miert group to present recommendations on TEN-T priority projects in June

Within the next few weeks, the Van Miert group is expected to submit its recommendations for a new list of priority infrastructure projects on the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). The list of projects is considered to become a central element of the proposed review.

Initially, the group received more than 100 applications for projects. To decide on a final selection, it has established four general criteria:

The High Level Group chaired by Karel Van Miert has decided to put forward several lists of TEN-T priority projects. It was faced with the difficult task of choosing between more than a hundred project proposals presented by the Member States and candidate countries.
