Between 10 and 12 December 2003, participants at the World Youth Summit organised by AEGEE, the European Students' Forum, discussed the role of Europe in the light of 'globalisation'.

Background:

Departing from the technical definition of 'globalisation' as an 'accelerating and dynamic multi-dimensional and interconnected process that generates intertwined links affecting all aspects of contemporary life', 200 youth delegates from all over the world advocated the importance of adopting free and fair trade as a means of ensuring that developing countries have equal bargaining power in their international dealings.

They put the emphasis squarely on the accountability of nations to international law and envisaged a stronger role for international organisations. All the delegates welcomed the idea of a global civil society endorsing cultural diversity.

AEGEE will be forwarding a final Strategy Paper (including recommendations on the process of the globalisation) to decision-makers in order to convey the youth position.
