The Commission announced on 28 February the launch of a wide stakeholder consultation on the activities of the high-level group set up in January to improve the competitiveness and regulatory system of Europe's automotive industry for the 21st Century (CARS 21).
Campaigners including T&E (Transport & Environment) and ETSC (European Transport Safety Council) had criticised CARS 21 when the group was launched in January this year. They called for other civil society groups to be involved in the consultation process, claiming the group was "severely unbalanced" and biased in favour of car manufacturers,
"We still hope they will take our views into account," said Karsten Krause from T&E. The consultation will be open until 15 April.
