Commission earmarks €2 billion for clean energy projects

The European Commission announced on Tuesday a €2 billion boost for low-carbon energy projects in Europe. The Commission is awarding a total of 1 billion EUR to 19 innovative low-carbon energy projects selected under the second call of the NER300 funding programme.

“Today the Commission has awarded €1 billion to 19 first-of-a-kind low carbon technology projects and it is worth noting that this is not out of the taxpayers' money, it is not out of the EU budget. It is actually the polluters' pay principal at work because the money comes from any of these 300 instruments were we sell allowances from the emissions trading scheme and then the money goes into innovative projects like the ones that are being granted money today.” EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said.
