The Agriculture Council will on 29 September reopen the debate on coexistence of genetically modified organisms and traditional crops. This discussion comes two months after the Commission had expressed opposition to a regulation at EU level (seeEURACTIV 24 July 2003)in its Communication of 23 July, and a parliamentary hearing on 11 September, in which experts expressed a similar view (seeEURACTIV 16 September 2003).

Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler will present the Commission's guidelines and discuss whether they are sufficient to deal the with issues arising from cross-contamination of GM and conventional crops.

The Italian presidency has prepared a set of questions on the most burning political issues as a basis for the discussion. These include GMO thresholds in organic produce; civil responsibility; thresholds for GMO in seeds; and the possibility of setting up GM-free zones.
