This discussion comes two months after the Commission had expressed opposition to a regulation at EU level (seeEURACTIV 24 July 2003)in its Communication of 23 July, and a parliamentary hearing on 11 September, in which experts expressed a similar view (seeEURACTIV 16 September 2003). Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler will present the Commission's guidelines and discuss whether they are sufficient to deal the with issues arising from cross-contamination of GM and conventional crops. The Italian presidency has prepared a set of questions on the most burning political issues as a basis for the discussion. These include GMO thresholds in organic produce; civil responsibility; thresholds for GMO in seeds; and the possibility of setting up GM-free zones.
