New roadmap for EU-wide biotech strategy

Drawing on the Commission’s January 2002 Communication on the life sciences and biotechnology, EU Ministers for Research, Competition and Industry outlined a new roadmap for the EU’s future policy approach.

Meeting during the 26 November Competitiveness Council, the ministers made a series of recommendations to the Commission. These include the need to "monitor the competitiveness of the EU biotechnology sector and related industries, in particular the EU framework conditions, entrepreneurship and functioning of markets, the legal framework, access to and dissemination of knowledge and technological counseling, research and innovation, access to capital, public/private cooperation, societal dialogue and ethical concerns".

Once a year, the Commission is required to issue a report. In 2003, the Council is scheduled to hold an in-depth debate on the roadmap's application for a strategy.
