Media Partnership – How clean are Europe’s food supply chains? The case of Spanish pork

At the event, speakers presented and discussed the findings from Open Society European Policy Institute’s new report, How clean are Europe’s food supply chains? The myths fuelling the massive growth of Spain’s pork industry, which seeks to uncover the environmental and human rights impact of industrialised meat production in the EU.

Open Society European Policy Institute’s previous publications on the European agri-food system showed how farm workers are exploited in both Southern and Northern Europe, and explored the feasibility of an EU ethical food label. As the EU moves to align food production and consumption with measures to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises, and aims to tackle human rights and environmental violations in supply and value chains, this new report  zoomed in on a case study which exemplifies how socially and environmentally unsustainable the current agro-industrial system is—even when food is produced and marketed entirely within the EU.
