Commission defines strategic priorities for 2002

By adopting first Annual Policy Strategy, the Commission introduces new instrument to link political priorities with financial resources

By adopting its first Annual Policy Strategy on Wednesday 21 February, the European Commission introduced a new instrument to link its political priorities for 2002 with the financial resources to implement them.

The Commission defined6 strategic priorities for 2002, which will be the focus of its Work Programme for next year:

  • The Euro
  • Sustainable Development
  • Governance in Europe
  • Enlargement
  • The Mediterranean
  • Development Cooperation

The Annual Policy Strategy also includes first orientations on the resource implications of the Commission's policy priorities. It lays thefoundations for the budget proposals 2002. The Commission is expected to present its draft budget for 2002 in July 2001.
