Commission to help SMEs to participate in B2B Internet platforms

The Commission on 18 November established a new expert group to investigate Internet trading opportunities and solutions to the problems that small and medium-sized firms face in accessing e-market places.

The expert group was established in response to a Commission staff document on 'B2B Internet Trading Platforms: Opportunities and Barriers for SMEs - A first Assessment'. The group is asked to make recommendations by July 2003 for actions at EU level, in particular in support of self-regulation to enhance trust in B2B e-marketplaces. The group will also look at issues such as the lack of awareness of the potential risks and benefits, the lack of reliable information on Internet platforms, business partners, products and services and the lack of trust in electronic transactions.
