EU condemns first decision of US President Bush

European Commission condemns decision by US government to cut federal funding to international agencies supporting family planning

The European Commission on Tuesday 23 January condemned the decision by the new US government of George W. Bush to cut federal funding to international agencies supporting family planning.

EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Diamantopoulou said she was disappointed and called upon Swedish Prime Minister Persson to put the issue on the agenda of the coming EU-US Summit in June.

Commissioner Diamantopoulou was attending an informal Council Meeting of Ministers for Gender Equality and Social Security in Swedish Norrköping. During that meeting, ministers launched the idea of setting up a gender equality institute and asked enlargement candidate countries to actively promote gender equality.
