Foot-and-mouth scare in France, Denmark and Belgium

Authorities in France, Denmark and Belgium have discovered suspected cases of foot-and-mouth

Farms in France, Denmark and Belgium have uncovered several suspected cases of foot-and-mouth over the weekend. Preliminary test results on the animals proved negative. Results from the second tests should reveal whether foot-and-mouth has crossed over the English Channel to mainland Europe.

The final tests on the French and Danish cases will not be available until mid-to-late Monday (5 March). Belgian test results will be made known within the next 24 hours.

There have been 70 confirmed cases in the United Kingdom. The European Union has imposed an export ban on all British animals and animal products. The ban will be reviewed on 7 and 9 March before it expires on 10 March. The disease is not dangerous to humans.
