EU transport ministers will discuss new measures to improve shipping safety during their Council meeting on 27 June. After the accident of the oil tanker Erika in December 1999, the Commission submitted a communication on the safety of seaborne oil trade, together with three proposals on port State control, inspection and survey organisations and double hull oil tankers.

The transport council will also have an orientation debate on the Galileo project, the EU's state-of-the-art global navigation satellite system.
