BERLIN – Merkel attempts to assuage conservatives’ fears

During a German-Greek economic forum on Monday (9 March), German Chancellor Angela Merkel aimed to soothe some of her party colleagues, who are fearing a new surge of refugees coming into Germany as the situation at the Turkish-Greek border unfolds.

“2020 is not 2015,” she said at the event, adding that she and her government will use the lessons learnt over the past five years to face a new influx of refugees.

Merkel also strongly condemned the actions of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, calling his actions “unacceptable,” and demanding support and solidarity for Greece.  (Sarah Lawton | EURACTIV.de)
