BERLIN – Merkel says ‘Nein’ to cabinet reshuffle

In response to a suggestion to “rejuvenate and renew” the government made on Monday (6 January) by the head of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and Minister-President of Bavaria, Markus Söder, Chancellor Angela Merkel has declined to reshuffle her cabinet.

Although the idea of bringing in ‘new blood’, particularly with the intent to replace the ministers in charge of the economy, Peter Altmaier, and science and innovation, Anja Karliczek, appeared to gain traction after it had been backed by the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), it has quickly fallen flat.

With the Chancellor’s formal rejection, there is no chance for this proposal to go any further.
