BRATISLAVA – Functioning single market ‘vital’ for new government

While it is yet to be approved by Slovakia’s National Council, the new government of Igor Matovič (OĽaNO) has adopted its programme statement, which foresees strong pro-EU and transatlantic orientation.

The COVID-19 related developments will be testing the EU, the text reads, adding that “it is more than likely that under the pressure of circumstances, there will be tendencies in the EU to weaken the basic institutional frameworks of the operation of the internal market and seek isolated national answers in many areas”.

According to the government, it is vital for Slovakia, as a very open economy, that current restrictions should only be proportional and temporary in character.

The government also pledges to support the community method in the EU and the efforts to strengthen the rule of law toolbox in the EU. (Zuzana Gabrižová |
