BUCHAREST – A surprising decision

The centre-right PNL (EPP) is supporting the candidacy of Nicusor Dan in the race for the Bucharest mayoralty. Dan, who is running as an independent against current mayor, Gabriela Firea of PSD, was the founder of the Save Romania Union (USR, now part of RE), but has since left the party.

USR is forming an alliance with PLUS, the party of former Romanian PM and EU Commissioner Dacian Ciolos, and promised to propose candidates that could rally support from all right-wing parties to fight against PSD candidates in the local elections.

Nicusor Dan was supported by the Bucharest branch of USR, while PLUS was proposing Vlad Voiculescu, a former health minister and a known NGO activist.

The two were debating how to select the candidate of the alliance, when PNL leader and interim PM Ludovic Orban said the centre-right party will support Dan. In the past, PNL said it, as the largest opposition party, would have its own candidates in local elections. (Bogdan Neagu, EURACTIV.ro)
