BUCHAREST – Dacia faces lack of orders

Renault reopened a few weeks ago its Dacia car factory in Romania after a shutdown due to the coronavirus epidemic, but is now sending some employees back home, because of insufficient orders.
The Dacia plant has some 15,000 employees, and 1,100 have been put in technical unemployment less than a month after they returned to work. According to union leaders, the affected employees are working in the division that makes parts for cars assembled in other countries, where car plants are still closed.
Renault recently announced a worldwide cost reduction plan, cutting jobs and investment, that included suspending a project to increase capacity at the Romanian plant.
