BUCHAREST – Senate chair appointment deemed unconstitutional

Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday (22 January) that the appointment of former foreign minister Teodor Melescanu as chair of the Senate on 10 September 2019 was against the Constitution.

On 10 September, Melescanu was named chairman of Romania’s upper house following the proposal of the then-governing Social Democratic party (PSD), while he was still a member of Romania’s liberal ALDE party, which opposed the nomination.

At that time, ALDE had just left the governing coalition formed with PSD. (EURACTIV.ro)
