Firms will be encouraged to stagger employees’ working hours as part of the phase-out of the coronavirus lockdown, Transport Minister Grant Shapps has said.
Ministers, who submitted plans to ease the lockdown to business leaders and trade unions on Sunday (3 May), believe that the move could be a way of preventing overcrowding on public transport and curbing public fears about another spike in the infection rate.
Boris Johnson’s government is expected to reveal its plans to ease the lockdown later this week, covering schools, commuting and workplace conditions. While surveys indicate that a majority of Britons back the government’s handling of the pandemic, they also suggest that people are unwilling to risk returning to work.
