The Vice-President of Catalonia and national coordinator of the separatist ERC party (Republican Left of Catalonia), Pere Aragonès, demanded on Thursday the immediate release of jailed ERC politician Oriol Junqueras, whose parliamentary immunity was recognised by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on Thursday, EURACTIV’s partner EFE reported.
“Justice arrives late, but it arrives at least. Today is a historic victory. The European Justice has opened a doctrine in favour of all European voters and citizens”, Aragonès said.
The president of Catalonia Quim Torra celebrated the ECJ verdict, EFE reported.
Junqueras, who was convicted to 13 years in prison for his involvement in a banned referendum on independence in Catalonia, should have been recognised as a member of the European Parliament, the Court ruled on Thursday.
The court added that the purpose of the legislation was to allow MEPs to travel to the EU House and participate in sessions.
