MADRID – Socialist Sánchez and conservative leader Casado will meet

Spain’s socialist PM Pedro Sánchez will meet with Pablo Casado, leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), on Monday (17 February) in a climate of mutual mistrust due to their strong differences on several key aspects of Spanish politics, in particular with regard to the crisis with Catalonia’s separatist parties, EURACTIV’s partner EFE reported.

Prior to the announcement of the meeting, Casado fiercely criticised Sánchez for not having invited him to discuss bilaterally at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, where the Spanish government is seated, EURACTIV’s partner EFE reported.

Sánchez stressed that the PP is not being a “state (loyal) opposition” to the government, and has asked him to at least agree on specific important matters, such as reforming the judiciary or addressing the crisis in Catalonia.
