New restrictions as Germany surpasses 20,000-mark

New restrictions will come into effect as of today (23 March) as Germany had surpassed the 20,000-mark over the weekend (24,227 as of 22 March), Merkel told the press conference on Sunday.

While all public gatherings of more than two people not living in the same residence are now forbidden, according to a new agreement between the federal government and states, people will have to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 metres between each other when stepping outside their homes for ‘essentials’, such as going to the supermarket, helping others, or exercising alone.

Additional restrictions will include closing all personal hygiene businesses such as hair salons and tattoo studios, which had remained open under previous agreements, and restaurants and pubs will close except for delivery and takeaway options. (Sarah Lawton | EURACTIV.de
