2.2% of Italy’s total workforce, which corresponds to 385,000 people, have lost their job due to the country’s lockdown measures, the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) estimated.
While the tourist industry and particularly restaurants and hotels have suffered the most during the pandemic, the commerce, logistics and transport sectors were also heavily impacted.
The limitations imposed on production sites have also affected consumption, which is expected to decrease by 4.1% compared to last year.
The lockdown conditions have seen the income of service businesses fall to similar numbers to the 2008-2009 financial crisis.
Consumer confidence has also decreased to 94.3, its lowest value in the past six years.
