SOFIA – Judge banned from the US for ‘serious corruption’

After Specialised Criminal Court Judge Andon Mitalov was said to be involved in letting Nikolai Malinov, who had been accused of spying for Russia, travel to Moscow, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo outed the judge for participating in “serious corruption”. Mitalov and his family are now forbidden to travel to the US.

“In his official capacity, Mitalov was involved in corrupt acts that undermined the rule of law and severely compromised the independence of democratic institutions in Bulgaria”, Pompeo said in a statement.

The name of Judge Mitalov came to light in November this year, after the then Prosecutor General, Sotir Tsatsarov, brought an appeal to the Supreme Judicial Council against him. (Krassen Nikolov | EURACTIV.bg)
