SOFIA – Severe pollution

The Bulgarian prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation on Saturday (25 January) into a case of severe pollution that killed tons of fish in Maritsa River.

Reports of dead fish floating along a stretch of the river between the southern village of Ognyanovo and Plovdiv have been submitted to the authorities.

The local authorities have warned people not to consume the dead fish. Environmental inspectors said the polluter was most likely a local company that recycles plastics, though the company in question denies having anything to do with this. (Krassen Nikolov | EURACTIV.bg)
