Due to a double crisis in health and economy, Greece will face a winter of “social hell”, main opposition leftist leader Alexis Tsipras said in an interview with Kontra channel. Tsipras lashed out against the conservative New Democracy government, saying it had at its disposal EU tools to face the COVID-19 impact and support people in need.
He referred to the “escape clause” and the ECB’s quantitative easing programme, as well as a €15 billion cash-buffer created when he was prime minister. He said the government has not taken advantage of these tools to support the most vulnerable parts of the society hit by the pandemic.
“Even now it has to intervene […] Otherwise, we will find ourselves in a winter of social hell”.
According to EU projections, the Greek economy will be affected the most due to the pandemic.
