VIENNA – Cyberattack on foreign ministry continues

Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg confirmed yesterday (22 January) that the cyberattack on the foreign ministry, which had first been reported on 4 January, is still ongoing.

Schallenberg gave no information regarding the origin of the attack, saying only that a state is likely to be behind it. For “tactical reasons”, the ministry will also be withholding all information on the perpetrator until their identity can be confirmed.

However, the foreign minister did state that the objective of the attack had most likely been to steal data. So far, this has been unsuccessful, as no data has been taken.

The foreign minister is currently receiving technical support from other ministries (interior, defence), from external experts and from the EU and its member states. (Philipp Grüll | EURACTIV.de)
