In the Caucasus, political stability in recent years has allowed the region to experience strong and consistent economic growth. More recently, big energy infrastructure projects such as the Southern Gas Corridor and the East-West Corridor have also underlined the strategic importance the region represents to its European neighbours.
Azerbaijan – the biggest country in the Caucasus – has played a constructive role in furthering economic ties with the EU, a key partner to all states in the region. However, the rekindling of a cross-border conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan has shifted attention to underlying political tensions. This is at a time when the imminent completion of the Southern Gas Corridor project is due to increase the country’s share of energy imports to the EU.
