EPP favourable to Commission’s report on Turkey

EPP-ED leaders have decided to accept the Commission’s October
2004 recommendations on Turkey’s bid to join the EU.

At their meeting at Meise in Belgium on 4 November in
preparation for the European Council, the leaders of the European
People’s Party-European Democrats (EPP-ED) group discussed Turkey’s
EU bid and concluded that they accept the Commission’s October 2004
recommendations. The group leaders appointed Austrian Chancellor
Wolfgang Schüssel as co-ordinator of the EPP-ED’s position within
the European Council.

The EPP-ED leaders also decided to give a “positive signal” to
Turkey’s ruling AKP party regarding its application to join the
European Parliamentary group. The EPP-ED will decide on the AKP’s
application in January 2005.
