At their meeting at Meise in Belgium on 4 November in preparation for the European Council, the leaders of the European People’s Party-European Democrats (EPP-ED) group discussed Turkey’s EU bid and concluded that they accept the Commission’s October 2004 recommendations. The group leaders appointed Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel as co-ordinator of the EPP-ED’s position within the European Council. The EPP-ED leaders also decided to give a “positive signal” to Turkey’s ruling AKP party regarding its application to join the European Parliamentary group. The EPP-ED will decide on the AKP’s application in January 2005.
