Commission President Romano Prodi has called on Albania to speed up reforms as part of its bid to join the EU.
Mr Prodi met with visiting Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano on 20 January 2004. Albania has been aiming to conclude a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU for a year now. The agreement would signal the first step towards EU membership for the Balkans state. However, Mr Prodi has yet to specify a date for the signing of that agreement. Albania "is making good progress towards internal stability, which we would like to see further developed," said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. "It has been playing a constructive role in the region."
