The idea that the European Union is leading the so-called ‘High Ambition Coalition’, which is pushing for a stronger deal at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris is nonsense, Green MEP Bas Eickhout has told EURACTIV.

He accused the EU of being outstripped in its climate ambition by the US, which this week joined the alliance. The coalition is calling for a future 1.5 degree limit to be written into the international agreement to cap global warming, which is expected to be finalised tomorrow.

The veteran of many COPs also gave a ‘dummies guide’ to the negotiations, and the EU’s struggle to influence them, particularly while accommodating coal dependant Poland.

Bas Eickhout is a Dutch Green MEP and climate scientist. He spoke to EURACTIV deputy news editor James Crisp at the COP21 yesterday (11 December). You can listen to the interview on Soundcloud below.
