Agreement on fishing quotas

EU fisheries ministers reached agreement to cut fish catches, but
refused to go for an all out ban.

The Commission’s proposals to shut fishing grounds for several
species to preserve threatened stocks were not followed by
fishiries minisiters in a late night compromise on 22 December.

Instead the council voted by qualified majority to gradual quota
cuts on cod, hake and sole to be introuced over a period of several
years.

The compromise got almost unanimous backing, only Lithuania
voted against.
