Calls for delaying the packaging waste directive review

Four industry groups are calling for a delay in the revision of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive

Four industry groups are calling for a delay in
the revision of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.
According to a recent press release by EUROPEN (European
Organization for Packaging and the Environment), and three other
industry groups (ASSURRE, AIM and CIAA), the planned revision of
this Directive Directive should be limited to the targets it
presently contains and all other changes should be deferred.

EUROPEN's Managing Director, Julian Carroll,
said that his organisation is in favour of a major rethink of the
Directive but that the review should await the outcome of other big
environmental debates, such as the 6th Environmental Programme, the
promised Green Paper on Integrated Product Policy or the coming
Prodi Report on Sustainable Governance.

The four industry groups also attacked recent
proposals by the Commission's Waste Management Unit, which would
introduce producer responsibility for packaging waste and new reuse
targets.
