Commission opens consultation on its environmental strategy

To prepare for the mid-term review of its sixth environmental action programme, the Commission has started an internet consultation for stakeholders.

The Commission is preparing its review of the 6th Environmental Action Programme. In order to get input from stakeholders, it has opened a consultation website where EU citizens and organisations can send their reactions and recommendations. The consultation will be open for 8 weeks and runs until 14 July 2006.

A recent report by the Institute for European Environmental Policy was highly critical of the implementation of the 6th EAP. It stated that EU environmental policy had been “politically downgraded” because of the Union’s Lisbon agenda for economic growth and jobs (see EURACTIV 18 May 2006).

In a reaction to EURACTIV, a commission spokesperson stated that the commission remains “committed to the EU’s sustainable development strategy”.
