Commission tackles electric and electronic waste

The Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

The Commission adopted a proposal for a Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and a proposal for a Directive on restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Under these new rules, producers will be responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment.

The WEEE draft directive complements earlier EU legislation on waste disposal, including the directives on landfills and incineration of waste, and follows the example set by other waste stream specific directives, such as the recently adopted end-of-life vehicles directive. One of its aims is to provide incentives to design electrical and electronic equipment in a more eco-friendly way.
