EU in debate over soil protection

The Commission is continuing with its series of internet consultations on future environmental policies with a debate on how to protect European soils from pollution.

The Commission’s environment directorate on 28 July launched an internet consultation to define future policy measures to address the issue of soil degradation in the EU. The consultation is open until 26 September.

This is the second in a series of consultations launched this summer after Commissioner Stavros Dimas launched a similar initiative on urban environment on 27 July (EURACTIV, 28 July 2005). It follows fierce internal debates within the Commission over the possible negative economic impact of future environmental policies (EURACTIV, 22 July 2005).

Contributions will serve as inspiration to the Commission when it adopts actual policies as part of a series of seven ‘thematic strategies’ on the environment due for adoption before the end of the year. The strategies will form part of the Commission’s 6th environmental action programme. Other strategies include air and marine protection, waste, natural resource use, urban environment and pesticides.
