EURACTIV and Life Terra Foundation – Planting trees in Brussels forest with RFSB

Life Terra is a project co-funded by the LIFE Programme through EISMEA with the goal to plant 500 million trees in Europe over 5 years – 1 tree for every European.

On the 26th March 2021, EURACTIV teamed up with Life Terra Foundation and the Royal Forestry Society of Belgium to plant trees in the Belgian forest near Bonlez.

We were joined by volunteers, forestry experts, and representatives from the European Commission who came to see how Life Terra is supporting forests in Europe and tackling the impact of climate change.

During the afternoon, volunteers and forestry experts planted 25 different plant species including; sessile oak, downy oak, Atlas cedar, Scots pine, and Douglas fir.

This particular forest, 30 minutes from Brussels, was decimated by the bark beetle. The bark beetle, small in size but large in impact, bores into the wood of trees, killing the bark and spreading infection.

Trees planted were also tagged and tracked using Life Terra’s new app. This app allows you to find information about the trees you have planted: its location, its species and the event and date when it was planted.  We are working on an innovative monitoring tool in order to provide more info about your trees like CO2 captured, height, etc.

If you are not able to join in on one of Life Terra’s planting events, you can still contribute to our ambitious goal by adopting or gifting a tree. Find out here how you can join in.
