Together, EU institutions and their member states are the biggest contributor to development cooperation worldwide. In 2012 alone, more than $37 billion was donated in aid – not counting loans made by the European Investment Bank.
The most significant beneficiary of aid funds from EU member states was the Ivory Coast, which received almost $2 billion in 2012. Almost $1.4 billion was invested in troubled spot Afghanistan. Populous emerging economies like China, Brazil and India also feature high up on the European aid list.
