INFOGRAPHIC: The world’s failing grades on universal education

In 2000, a World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, set six development goals to be realised by 2015, some more specific than others.

These included:

• Expanding and improving childcare and education;
• providing free, high quality and compulsory primary school education for all;
• ensuring equitable access to learning and life skills for children and young adults;
• a 50% improvement in adult literacy, especially for women;
• eliminating gender disparities in education by 2005 and achieving gender equality; by 2015;
• ensuring that recognised and measurable learning outcomes are achieved by all.

The Forum and the ‘Education For All’ movement which organised it were brought together under the umbrella of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

However, progress towards meeting every single one of the goals has been patchy and none of them are likely to be met, according to the annual UNESCO Global Monitoring Report.
