Immunisation is recognised as one of the most efficient, successful and cost-effective health investments in history. One in five of all children who die before the age of five lose their lives to vaccine preventable diseases. More than 22 million children are still not vaccinated against common but life-threatening diseases.
GAVI Alliance, thanks to many donors, including from the European Union, funds immunisation programmes in developing countries where 85% of the world’s unvaccinated children live. It also supports the strengthening of health systems and local civil society organisations to ensure effective immunisation and health services. By 2015, GAVI support to countries will have helped immunise nearly a quarter of a billion children more.
