EU Internal Market commissioner Michel Barnier welcomed on Tuesday the MEPs proposal of issuing cross-border EU licenses for online music providers.

More than 500 licenced digital music services operate worldwide, but only one of them is available in all EU member states. The multitude of licences and collecting societies makes it hard for service providers to offer their services across the whole of Europe.

“The directive in fact lays down the conditions under which these companies should operate when it come to granting a multi territorial licenses and finally this Directive will give the companies the right to be represented by other companies if needs be , if they themselves can’t abide by the criteria, that will allow us to cut down on the number of necessary licenses to launch on-line services in Europe.” said EU commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier.
